Want to start a career as a nail tech, or start your own nail tech beauty business? One of the essential steps to succeed as a nail tech is to build a high-quality, professional kit.
Here are the fundamental basics every nail tech needs:
Nail Files
Natural nail files – for smoothing out any edges before application
Acrylic files – for precise edge-to-finished applications
Electric file (optional) – a multi-purpose tool that can adapt to the task required, using different strengths and textures.
UV or LED Lamp
UV lamps need to be a 36-watt lamp (4 x 9-watt bulbs) to ensure nails cure at all points on the nail. Bulbs should be replaced every 6 months (they will not blow like a light bulb they just lose their strength). Place a sticker on the bottom of your lamp with the date on it that needs to be changed.
Cuticle clippers & oil
Cuticle nippers help to tidy the appearance of the nails before application, leading to a smoother, glossier finish. Applying cuticle oil as a final step helps to promote strong, healthy nail beds, and soothes the nails after filing and application is over.
Base coat & top coat
A high-quality basecoat forms the perfect foundation for nail treatments and protects your client’s natural nails from staining or damage. A fast-drying topcoat gives a glossy shine and Insta-worthy finish. Plus it will help those looks last longer too!
Gel polish colour
Gel polishes are a good investment, as they are long-lasting and can be applied straight onto natural nails or to enhancements, like acrylic tips.
Each layer must be cured for a minimum of 2 minutes under a UV lamp and between 30-40 seconds under an LED Lamp. Normally 2 thin layers are required to ensure even coverage.
Brushes
Nail brushes are a must if you want to create exciting designs and add precision to your application. You’ll need a wide selection of high-quality and durable brushes to allow you to work with precision and creativity.
Nail tips
Nail tips allow you to create the perfect shape and length for your client’s dream look. These can come ready-formed, or you can choose to work with square tips and adjust them yourself with a file for a bespoke, personalised finish.
Acrylic powder
Acrylic nails require specialised powders and liquids in a few varieties to give your clients stunning looks and offer versatility. The acrylic liquid is mixed with acrylic powder to create the nail itself, offering the strength and durability loved by so many clients.
Removal
Gel polish should be soaked off with pure acetone to prevent damage and overfilling to the natural nail, finish removing residual gel with a white block only.
